Laura Wald, leader of the local BK Book Club and the Founder of Freewoods Films, will lead the evening with an interview, a Q&A with the audience, and an interactive game of Pictionary with the illustrator and selected members of the audience.
FOOD! We are honored to have The United Tastes of America and Gladys Catering in attendance! Come hungry and enjoy the diverse food of America that will be for sale by local, refugee and immigrant-owned caterers.

Watchung Booksellers will be selling books at the event and a signing will conclude the evening.
THIS EVENT IS FREE but Space is limited so you must RSVP. Registration will end January 19th or whenever space is filled...whichever happens first!

Growing A Manuscript: From Short Story to Novel

Have a story sitting on your hard drive that feels like it wants to be a larger project? Want to continue exploring your characters and their world? This course aims to teach novel writing as a practice of expansion. We'll read Zadie Smith, Meta Wagner, Lauren Wilkinson and Jonathan Safran Foer to guide our discussions of novel planning, world-building, structure, and how to grow a story without losing its urgency. Through workshop of one another's opening chapters, you'll get firsthand practice of skills necessary to turn short fiction into a novel.

Psychological, unseen injuries are often the most difficult to identify and treat. As medicine struggles to diagnose and treat post-traumatic stress disorder, literature is recognizing its reality and import. Novelists Shahriar Mandanipour (Moon Brow), Katia D. Ulysse (Mouths Don’t Speak), Dan Sheehan (Restless Souls) join Sara Nović (Girl at War) to explore the power of PTSD, whether it’s acquired on the battlefield or on the home front.

Join poets, scholars and cultural writers for a reading and performance of signed poetry, featuring a variety of genres and styles, followed by a discussion on linguistics, translation, publishing and poetics. Poet, performer and director of ASL SLAM Douglas Ridloff, founders of The Flying Words project Peter Cook and Kenny Lerner, and poet and editor John Lee Clark will share their original works. This will be  followed by an exercise in translation by author and artist Adrean Clark and a moderated discussion by author and critical essayist Sara Nović. The event will be introduced by Rachel Mazique, NTID Department of Liberal Studies, Rochester Institute of Technology.
